The Department of Life Sciences is composed of faculty from a variety of scientific backgrounds encompassing the biological, physical, and mathematical sciences. The Department maintains a special emphasis on infectious diseases, which informs both the teaching and research it undertakes.
In addition to teaching the introductory science coursework fundamental to most of the College’s academic programs, the Department offers bachelor’s degree programs in Biology, Biomedical Technology, Forensic Psychology, Forensic Science, Health Sciences, Microbiology (in addition to a minor in Microbiology) and Psychology. It is also home to master’s degree programs in Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, Molecular Biosciences, and the Pre-Pharmacy pathway into the PharmD program.
The department's infectious disease research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and focuses on host-pathogen interactions, with a special emphasis on tularemia, HIV, and influenza. Other areas of interest include investigating cell death pathways and the development of antibiotic resistance. Medicinal chemistry research in the department integrates synthetic organic chemistry, pharmaceutical formulation and stability, and biochemical assays to identify new therapeutic agents.
